Chairman of St. Joseph’s Hospitals Foundation Named Philanthropist of the Year 11/24/2009 TAMPA, Fla. (November 23, 2009) – In recognition of National Philanthropy Day, St. Joseph’s Hospitals Foundation Board Chairman Elaine Shimberg and her husband Hinks were honored November 18, 2009, by the Suncoast Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals as Tampa Bay’s Philanthropists of the Year. The Shimbergs were nominated by St. Joseph’s Hospitals Foundation, the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center and the University of South Florida. “It is a recognition that is much deserved,” said Isaac Mallah, St. Joseph’s Hospitals President and CEO. “As a couple, Elaine and Hinks Shimberg have been—and continue to be—investors in the quality of life we all enjoy. Their priority is doing what is best for the community.” In addition to supporting St. Joseph’s Hospital, the Shimbergs have provided generous support to a variety of organizations that serve health care, education, culture and the performing arts. Ms. Shimberg's leadership with St. Joseph's Hospital spans 25 years. Beginning as a member of the St. Joseph's Development Council and serving as its President in 1987, she was instrumental in creating the Council's 20th anniversary gift to St. Joseph's Hospital, the "Wellness on Wheels" bus. An advocate for women's health, Ms. Shimberg championed the Women's Healthy Heart program, an innovative program to help women understand their risk for heart disease. In addition to serving as Chairman of the St. Joseph’s Hospitals Foundation Board, Ms. Shimberg is a member of the St. Joseph's-Baptist Health System Board, having also served as its Chairman. In 2005, she was honored as St. Joseph's Hospital’s “Volunteer of the Year.” “Together, the Shimbergs work in concert to create outcomes that are even greater than their already outstanding individual contributions,” said Deborah Kotch, St. Joseph’s Hospitals Foundation President and CEO. “Thanks to their efforts, Tampa Bay is a stronger, healthier, more compassionate community.” |
